Neck Pain FAQ's

by Matthew DiLorenzo, DC

How is neck pain caused?

Neck pain affects a significant number of individuals. Recent studies have found more than 10% of Americans suffer from neck pain at any given time. The reason is that the neck region contains many delicate, pain sensitive structures commonly exposed to abuse and abnormal stresses.

When the neck is out of alignment it puts pressure on the nerve. This “pinching” can cause many symptoms, pain being one of them, but also creating issues into the shoulder, down the arms and into the hands and fingers.  This can also cause headaches, pain in the jaw and ringing or humming noise in the ears.

Vertebrae can shift out of alignment from:

  • Sleeping wrong
  • Poor posture
  • Improper telephone use and “iNeck” (looking down at your cell phone & other portable devices)
  • Whiplash
  • incomplete rehabilitation of past injuries
  • lack of proper and periodic spinal alignments
  • improper workstation setup

Can neck pain can be prevented?

Some of the most common reasons neck pain occurs can be avoided by using a few simple techniques. These include:

  • Maintaining good posture when your sit or stand
  • Regular chiropractic adjustments
  • Moving your computer monitor to eye level
  • Using the proper pillow based on your sleep position
  • Getting regular exercise to maintain proper movement in your neck

What treatment options are used?

Chiropractic Care focuses on restoring balance and maintaining alignment throughout the spine. After an exam is performed and any necessary x-rays are taken to properly diagnose the source of the pain, you will be given an individualized care plan that can help relieve your pain and help you restore your health.

A chiropractic adjustment is often the best way to resolve neck pain. An adjustment will realign your spine and remove pressure from the nerves and delicate tissue surrounding your vertebrae. Depending on the subluxation and the amount of damage done, you may feel relief immediately or shortly after your adjustment.

Adjustments combined with therapeutic exercises and stretches will be used to assist in the restoration of proper cervical motion and increase cervical muscle strength and coordination. Exercises and stretches are unique in that they can be performed outside the office without the assistance of the doctor.
