Sciatica FAQ's

by Matthew DiLorenzo, DC

What is sciatica?

The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in the body. It is found at the base of the spinal cord and travels down the back of both legs. Sciatica is a painful condition that’s caused when the sciatic nerve is compressed. It originates in the lower back or sacrum and can travel down into one or both legs. There are many different reasons for sciatica to flare up including a misaligned vertebra, herniated or bulging discs, and pregnancy. The pain can vary in intensity such as dull or sharp. Other symptoms associated with sciatica include burning, numbness and tingling sensations, and an electric-shock type of pain traveling the length of the leg.

How do I know if I have sciatica?

A thorough chiropractic and orthopedic exam is an essential first step towards the treatment of sciatica. X-rays may be necessary.  Once a proper diagnosis can be made, the right course of treatment will be prescribed for you.  Chiropractors receive extensive training that allows them to locate and correct subluxations.

Dr. Matt DiLorenzo has 18 years of experience evaluating patients and tracking down the source of their sciatic nerve pain. Once the origin is determined, Dr. Matt has a variety of techniques that are tailored to the specific condition and needs of the individual.

How does chiropractic treat sciatica symptoms?

Chiropractic adjustments are a safe and effective way to take pressure off the spinal cord and help realign the body to free restricted movement of the spine. They help to reduce the nerve impingement that is responsible for causing inflammation, muscle spasm, pain, and other symptoms related to sciatica.
